Creating a SharePoint Site Hierarchy

In Chapter 1, we described the basic concepts of sites, site collections, site definitions, and site templates. To recap, a site collection consists of one or more sites, where each site is created by using as a template a site definition or a customized site definition, both of which are commonly known as site templates.

The top-level site of a site collection is created when the site collection is created. A site collection can be created either by using the browser or programmatically. You cannot use SharePoint Designer, however, to create a site collection. You can use SharePoint Designer only to create child sites within a site collection.
