Improving the Layout with Hyphenation

Sometimes the right edges of left-aligned paragraphs look way too ragged and uneven. Justified paragraphs can contain big white spaces between words, especially in columnar text. You can easily repair these common problems with automatic hyphenation, or, if you want more control, you can have Word suggest where you should hyphenate. You can then decide whether or not to insert the hyphen and where in the word you should insert it.

Set Automatic Hyphenation

  1. On the Page Layout tab, click the Hyphenation button, and choose Automatic from the dropdown menu.
