5.5. Key Performance Indicators in SharePoint 2007

An important part of SharePoint dashboards is the ability to add Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). KPIs are simply visual numeric indicators of business processes. For example, we might wish to always display the up-to-the-minute number of employees in our organization, or the gross values of orders placed through a corporate web site.

There is an entire body of knowledge surrounding the proper selection of KPIs that help track various parts of an organization. In a "balanced scorecard" scenario KPIs are visually grouped under top-level strategic goals for an organization.
