Some project managers use Project simply to paint a picture of all the effort their project will entail and then stash the plan in a drawer. That’s a mistake. After you enter all the project data, save a baseline, and then track actual activity on the project, you receive in return an amazing array of information from Project that can help you stay on time and on budget.

After you track some actual activity on several tasks, Project lets you view baseline estimates alongside the real-time plan. Project alerts you to tasks that are running late and also shows how the critical path shifts over time. To read about the critical path, review Chapter 12.
