Figure 5.17 shows a simple implementation of a LAN-based backup
solution in which servers are all connected onto a local area network as well
as the backup server, which is connected directly to a tape library. This dia-
gram assumes that the Exchange 2003 databases are “local” to the servers:
they could be located on a SAN, but they could also be located on direct-
attached storage, and that wouldn’t make a big difference. Clients can also
connect on the same LAN infrastructure, and that is not necessarily a good
