Chapter 8. Isolating Managed Extensions
In addition to using techniques such as automation, Web services, and remoting, Microsoft Office developers can also use a number of more formalized protocols. Office interop protocols include managed COM add-ins, RealTime Data components, smart tags, smart documents, and Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO). This list is in chronological order, from oldest to most recent. In this chapter, we’ll focus on issues that arise with three of these protocols: COM add-ins, RealTime Data components, and some managed smart tags. It is no coincidence that these are all the older protocols. Also, only some smart tags—the older ones—pose a problem.
