Whereas the objective of the .NET Pet Shop application has been to demonstrate performance metrics between competing technologies (in particular, .NET/J2EE), the objective of Nile has been to compare and contrast performance gains with the .NET platform, in contrast to a similar application developed in Visual Basic 6.0. In addition, the Nile application highlights some of the benefits that Windows 2003 and IIS 6.0 bring to the table, as compared to running .NET applications on Windows 2000/IIS 5.0. Similar to .NET Pet Shop, Nile is also an electronic commerce application.
