Extensibility

Because SharePoint is built on the Microsoft ASP.NET platform, existing ASP.NET developers can readily tune in to SharePoint development. SharePoint 2010 includes an extensible server-side and client-side programming interface, such as Web services, XML, and JavaScript. A number of third-party and open source add-ons have already been developed for SharePoint, and many of those add-ons can be found on CodePlex. Applications, including Visual Studio 2010 and SharePoint Designer 2010 (now free), form the core SharePoint 2010 development toolset.
