URL Considerations When Moving to a New Site or Upgrading

Typically, if you are moving or upgrading your SharePoint site to a new 2010 site collection, you might end up with a default.aspx file in the root of the new site collection. This is especially true when moving a WSS3.0 site to a SharePoint Foundation 2010 site; in that case, people might still attempt to hit the address of http://sitename.com/default.aspx rather than http://sitename/sitepages/home.aspx, which is typical of a URL in a 2010 site. Therefore, to avoid having people access the incorrect page or be unable to resolve the correct address, you should also place a redirect in the default.aspx in the root of the 2010 site.
