Application Model (Sites)
The major changes between SharePoint 2007 and SharePoint 2010 are around lists, external lists, and workflow. External lists, built on top of the Business Data Catalog (BDC), are new in SharePoint 2010 and provide a means by which to connect and work with data in SharePoint sites from external sources, such as an SQL database or Web service. Content types, introduced as part of SharePoint 2007, remain a core part of the 2010 platform and centrally define metadata for content and documents throughout sites and site collections.
