Service Applications: Sharing SharePoint Resources

Service applications fall under the fold of Central Administration and replace the Shared Services Provider (SSP) model used in SharePoint 2007. Service applications include standalone services such as Search, People (user profiles), and managed metadata (term stores and metadata) and can be consumed by Web applications on a needs basis. Some service applications can also be shared between SharePoint farms.
