Creating a New Master Page Based on the v4.master Page

If you’re relatively new to SharePoint or want to maintain the same functionality as that derived from the out-of-the-box master pages, then a good option for creating a new SharePoint master page is to base it on one of the existing master pages, such as the v4.master page. For instance, the v4.master page already includes HTML markup for positioning of common objects, including navigation, ribbon, and search. By leveraging the existing markup you can use CSS to style existing elements and make slight tweaks to the HTML markup to effect other changes.
