XML Web Services Overview

Web services expose data in an XML format and use a protocol named SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) to transport the data over computer networks and connect different types of systems. SOAP uses underlying protocols, such as Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), and Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP), which typically are not blocked by firewalls.

Web services can be accessed over a network or hosted on a remote system. The description of how to call these services is described in an XML format, known as the Web Services Description Language (WSDL).
