Introducing External Content Types (ECTs) and External Lists
ECTs are similar in some ways to any other SharePoint content type. They contain the fields or columns used in SharePoint lists. Fields may be of type text, dates, look-up, or choice. All lists in SharePoint have an attached content type; in some cases this could be something as simple as an item content type, containing only the Title (single line of text) field. ECTs are used in SharePoint to define the fields to display the information in SharePoint lists specific to data imported through those fields that are mapped to a field in a LOB system.
