The big news is that SQL Mail is discontinued in SQL Server 2012. You must use Database Mail to send notifications and other kinds of mail messages from SQL Server.

Database Mail is an enterprise-class implementation designed with all the features you’d expect from this next-generation database server, most of which are not available in SQL Mail.
