Queue Activation

In the simplest form on a Service Broker application, messages wait on a queue until being pulled off by a service to be processed. If additional processing threads are necessary to keep up with the flow of messages, the developer of the Service Broker application will need to code control logic to launch additional work threads.

In addition to being designed for asynchronous processing, Service Broker also provides dynamic scalability. The ACTIVATION clause of a Service Broker queue allows you to associate a stored procedure to a queue. When the STATUS is set to ON, as soon as a message hits the queue, Service Broker will automatically launch the stored procedure to process the message.
