Alerts provide the capability to send notification or perform actions based upon events or conditions that occur either within the SQL Server instance or on the machine hosting your instance.
Alerts can be configured as one of the following three types:
SQL Server event
Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) event
An alert is raised for a SQL Server event based on either an error number or an error severity level. You can additionally restrict the alert to a specific database or a specific text string within an error message.
