Implementing the Dimensional Model

The dimensional model, as described in the preceding section, is a logical model. To house data, the logical model must be physically implemented. This is done using both relational and multidimensional database technologies.

The Relational Data Warehouse

Using a relational database platform, such as Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Database Engine Services, the dimensional model is implemented as a collection of tables. Dimensions are translated into dimension tables with columns housing attribute values. Likewise, facts are implemented as fact tables with columns housing fact measure values.
