The MDX Language

As mentioned earlier, Analysis Services employs a very different data storage and retrieval mechanism from that of a relational database technology. This mechanism is based on the concept of an n-dimensional space. In a relational database, such as SQL Server Database Engine Services, data storage and retrieval is based on set theory.

This fundamental difference between the two technologies requires you to handle interaction with the data in very different ways. With relational databases, the SQL language is used to assemble sets of data. With Analysis Services, the MDX language is used to assemble tuples identifying points of data within an n-dimensional space.
