Designing the Dataset

With the connection to a data source defined, Reporting Services can now retrieve data for use in a report. In Reporting Services, the linking of a query to a particular data source and metadata about the data returned is referred to as a dataset.

Regardless of the data source employed, all Reporting Services datasets utilize a standardized structure for making data available within a report. The process of translating an Analysis Services cell set into this standard dataset structure is loosely referred to as data flattening.
