Part II. Design Fundamentals

In Part I, you learned about the purpose of business intelligence (BI), the structures used in data warehousing, and the value of an online analytical processing (OLAP) solution. You were also introduced to the role of the Unified Dimensional Model (UDM) in Analysis Services and built your first cube by using a template in a top-down approach. Throughout the chapters of Part II, you’ll build a more complex cube based on tables in a data warehouse. You’ll learn design fundamentals and then apply what you learn by creating Analysis Services objects—attributes, dimensions, measure groups, aggregations, and hierarchies—to construct a cube using a bottom-up approach.
