Network Monitoring

The type and speed of the network hardware you choose can affect the overall performance of your database system. If you try to transmit more data than your network can handle at one time, data transmissions will queue up and be delayed. This delay will, in turn, slow down the entire system.

The first step in finding network problems is to periodically monitor and log the network performance so that you can gauge the network utilization as a percent of the maximum effective bandwidth, as listed in Table 9-2. You can then use this data to determine whether your network is a bottleneck and also gauge the magnitude of the problem.
