One of the great advantages of team channels is that they bring structure and relevancy to a team-related topic. The channel structure comes with the nature of the channel itself, which is organized into various tabs. For example, you deal with file-related tasks on the Files tab. The channel relevancy comes from the fact that, outside of the General channel that includes all team members, the users of a particular channel are members because they or someone else thought the channel topic to be of sufficient interest.
