Summary

Server virtualization is very much a standard in today’s organizations, and Hyper-V offers a rock-solid and feature-rich platform for use in organizations of any size. Technologies like Dynamic Memory enable the creation of high-density virtual machine server environments, and dynamic placement technologies can help rebalance virtual machines that may not have been optimally placed. As highlighted in this chapter, however, any successful virtualization migration first requires the discovery of resource usage and proper planning to ensure the long-term stability of the Hyper-V environment.

The new features in Windows Server 2012 provide enhanced mobility features for virtual machines, enabling the movement of virtual machines between Hyper-V servers that are not clustered together. Using the Shared Nothing Live Migration capability, a virtual machine stored on local storage can be moved—without downtime—to a completely different server using any supported Hyper-V storage, which can be direct attached, on a storage area network or even on an SMB share with nothing but a single-gigabit network connection. Migration will even be possible to public cloud Infrastructure as a Service solutions as the cloud vendors adopt Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V. Combine this complete flexibility in mobility of virtual machines with network virtualization that enables the complete abstraction of the virtual machine networks from the physical network fabric, and you have the capability to host ...
