The History of Multitargeting

Visual Studio took its first step toward multitargeting in Visual Studio 2008, but it was a baby step. Even though with Visual Studio 2008 you could target different versions of the .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5, the underlying Common Language Runtime (CLR) for all these frameworks remained the same: the .NET CLR version 2.0. Figure 3-9 illustrates how you can think of it as an “onion model,” where CLR 2.0 is the core and the .NET Framework 2.0, .NET Framework 3.0, and .NET Framework 3.5 are layers built on top of one another.
