Optimizing the Windows Installer Configuration

The Windows component that handles program installation is Windows Installer. Group Policy includes many policy settings that allow you to modify how Windows Installer works. Windows Installer performs many tasks when programs are installed, including the following:

  • Creating a System Restore checkpoint

  • Creating or updating the baseline file cache

  • Creating rollback copies of files

  • Checking user privileges and install mode

  • Performing the installation

  • Logging the results of the installation
