Exploring Share Permissions

Within a network, it’s common to share folders on a server or workstation so that users within the network can access the folders. When a folder is shared, users can access the share through mapped drives or by entering the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path directly in the Search Programs And Files text box on a Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7 system, or the Start Search text box on a Windows Server 2008 system.

The UNC path has the format of \\servername\sharename. For example, if a share named Projects were available from a server named Success1, the UNC path would be \\Success1\Projects.
