Advanced NTFS Features

NTFS has many advanced features that administrators should know about and understand. These features include the following:

  • Hard links

  • Data streams

  • Change journals

  • Object identifiers

  • Reparse points

  • Remote storage

  • Sparse files

Each of these features is discussed in the sections that follow.

Hard Links

Every file created on a volume has a hard link. The hard link is the directory entry for the file and it is what allows the operating system to find files within folders.
