Configuring Logs and Setting Alerts
The Performance Logs and Alerts tool, also a part of the Performance snap-in, provides a more sophisticated way to monitor performance than adding counters to System Monitor and watching a graph. Performance Logs and Alerts provides the following three basic services:
You can create a counter log that logs the performance of specified counters over time. A counter log measures data in much the same way as System Monitor but logs the data to a comma or tab-separated value file instead of displaying it. The log file can be opened later in System Monitor to view a graph of performance or to be imported into a program like Excel or Access.
