Using the Automated System Recovery Wizard

In previous editions of Windows NT, an Emergency Repair Disk (ERD) was used to store portions of the Registry and other important information that could be used in the event of a disaster to help recover your system. Of course, you also needed to create a backup of your system disk partition on a regular basis to use with the ERD if you wanted to be able to completely recover from a disaster.

In Windows XP, this feature is incorporated into the Backup utility, where you can create not only a floppy disk (what we used to call the ERD), but also a backup of the local system partition. Now, the floppy disk is called the Automated System Recovery (ASR) disk.
