Talking with Your Middle Schooler, or Not

There is an almost mythic quote in the parenting world, often attributed to Mark Twain, although it’s not his and no one knows who really said it. Nonetheless, it’s a terrific characterization of the evolving parent–child relationship through the teen years: “When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around.
