The months of August and September 2015 were marked by media images of refugees making their way from Syria via Turkey, Greece, Macedonia, Slovenia, or Hungary to Austria and Germany, or even further afield to Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Norway. It was moving to see adults, children, and the elderly walking with determination, fleeing war, misery, and despair.
