Wireless Basics
Before we get into the wireless networking details, let’s take a look at the different methods to carry radio frequency (RF) traffic that are used on a wireless network:
• Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) DSSS is a modulation technique that transfers data using the full bandwidth of a frequency. 802.11b wireless networks use DSSS. (More on the 802.11 standards in a bit.)
• Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) As the name implies, with frequency hopping, FHSS transmits radio signals by switching frequencies at a high rate. The benefit of FHSS is that it is harder for someone to tap into the data as the frequency continues to change.
