Switches can do much more than receive frames on one port and send them out to one or more other ports. On managed switches, virtual local area networks (VLANs) can create broadcast domains at Layer 2, trunking can bring all traffic from all VLANs across to other switches, Layer 3 functionality can be implemented if the switch is a multilayer switch, and Switched Port Analyzer (SPAN) can make copies of frames going in and out of certain ports and send them to monitor systems that are connected to other ports.
