Comparing Desktops—The Notification Area

Windows introduced the notification area as part of the taskbar in Windows 95, and, up until Windows 7, it didn’t change much. Sure, Windows XP hid little-used icons, but that’s all it could do to tame the glut of icons, and this remained true for Vista as well, as shown in the following illustration.

If you right-click a Vista machine’s taskbar and select Properties, you’ll see a tab called Notification Area. You could find these settings in Windows XP, too; Vista simply moved some of those settings to this new tab.
