Chapter 4. Naval Warfare
Today’s naval fleet comprises the most modern and sophisticated aircraft carriers, weapons systems, cruisers, destroyers, and submarines in the world. Together, the naval fleet is able to “control the sea and project power, defense, and influence beyond the sea.”
As the needs of the modern Navy move from the deep ocean toward the littorals (the shallow regions between land and sea), the fleet’s capabilities are being adjusted accordingly to help the Navy transform itself to meet its new mission. Modifications to existing ships and submarines are providing incredible capabilities for projecting power forward from the sea and on shore to aid our joint force commanders.
