In this chapter I describe some formal mindful eating practices. Think of these eating exercises as mindfulness meditations if you like – practices in cultivating mindful awareness. I start by exploring a more traditional mindful eating exercise to give you a solid foundation upon which you can build.
Discovering how to consistently keep your attention on what you’re experiencing while you eat is one of the primary ways that you strengthen the habit of mindful eating. In this chapter I explore a range of sensational eating experiences, allowing you to fine-tune your awareness skills.
For this introductory mindful eating practice you need one small bite of food. I recommend something like a single raisin, a grape or a cherry.
