Many components of Minecraft connect with each other, so a variety of helpful procedures have been discovered. Though clever players have discovered many helpful tips, the ten in this chapter should provide a better survival experience.

Digging Safely

The underground in Minecraft presents quite a bit of danger, so mine carefully to avoid these common hazards:

check.png Falling when digging straight down: Breaking the block underneath you always increases the danger of falling into a pit or a pool of lava. Staircase mines (described in Chapter 5) are useful because they don’t require you to dig straight down.

check.png Falling sand and gravel or flowing lava when digging upward: Be sure to quickly stopper flowing lava with blocks such as cobblestone.

If you follow basic safety guidelines, you can navigate dark caves and huge lava lakes with no problem.
