season seagulls have territories which they assiduously defend
from other birds. If another bird approaches too close, the
claimant will charge forward and peck at the intruder. Yet each
gull is also cognizant of the boundaries of adjacent territories.
Once a gull realizes it is outside its range, it will retreats back to
its home
turf.
The interesting situation occurs when two birds
meet at a mutual boundary. Here the urge to back off and the
defensive imperative are evenly balanced. What happens it is that
the birds face each other and peck violently at the ground.
