Preface
Landfilling was and still remains an important component of municipal solid waste man-
agement. Despite the enormous progress that has already taken place in terms of reducing
its role in the waste management, landfills are still needed in the modern world. Landfilling
is the most cost efficient method of waste disposal, which explains its prevalence. Unfortu-
nately, its low cost is not connected with a low environmental risk. Deposition of waste in the
landfill poses a threat to the purity of water, soil, and especially air. What is more, due to the
slow rate of decomposition of organic matter under anaerobic conditions negative effects of
the landfill are becoming problematic for future generations.
