Attenuation of greenhouse gas emissions via landfill aeration
4.1 INTRODUCTION
One of the methods for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from landfills is to aerate the
deposited waste. The decomposition of organic matter occurring in the presence of oxygen
is faster and more efficient than anaerobic digestion. The transformation of the conditions
within the waste body from anaerobic to aerobic leads to a decrease in a methane concentra-
tion in the landfill gas in favor of carbon dioxide (having significantly lower GWP). What is
more, the presence of oxygen provides other benefits. For instance, it also contributes to the
