The IEEE 802.16 standards define only the PHY and MAC layer of wireless MAN networks. The wireless “lower layers” are then expected to connect to other networks such as IP-based networks to provide these networks wireless extensions, mobility, an error-free physical layer, and a service flow based QoS-defined services. This connectivity is expected to happen via the convergence layer of the IEEE 802.16e. Left to its own forces, the IEEE 801.16 standards could lead to a wide range of ways in which networks could be built by using the convergence layer.
