Engineers create models that range from cryptic sketches on the back of a dinner napkin to formal mathematical representations, often augmented by full-scale physical simulations. Collectively, these representations not only capture and provide insight into a design but formal models enable the analysis and prediction of a product’s critical aspects before it is operational. As technology has advanced, the sophistication of models and their role has expanded until models are indispensable in the engineering of modern application systems.
