chapter two
General formulation of the
discontinuous Galerkin method
In this chapter, the general procedure of the discontinuous Galerkin (DG)
method for hyperbolic conservation laws is presented. Before delving in
the actual method, a brief review of some mathematical preliminaries rel-
evant to the DG method is provided. Different methods for the treatment
of the ux term are outlined. Time integration procedures relevant to the
DG formulation are presented.
2.1 Conservation form of equations
A system of m partial differential equations in the conservation form can
be written as Equation (2.1), where the variables are dened in Equation
