Chapter 13

Application of Multi-Rate Models for Modeling UMTS Networks

13.1 Introduction

In this chapter we will present and discuss traffic issues related to the multi-service cellular network with soft capacity that can be analyzed with the “multi-rate traffic models” presented in Chapter 7. We analyze the fixed-point method for soft capacity modeling in a group of cells (Section 13.2), intercell and intracell overflow in single-service mobile networks (Section 13.3) and call transition mechanism in mobile networks with hard and soft capacity (Section 13.4).

13.2 Models of Group of Cells Carrying Multi-Rate Traffic

In this chapter we will present traffic issues that deal with the cellular system that can be analyzed with the application of the “multi-rate models” presented in Chapter 7, and the fixed-point method, presented in Section 13.2.1. The methods discussed earlier (Sections 11.3 and 11.4) addressed intercellular interference exclusively through coefficients and equivalent capacities. The methods to be presented in this chapter will include the phenomenon of “soft” capacity (Section 11.1.2) directly in the computational method using the fixed-point method.

13.2.1 Fixed-Point Method

The fixed-point method is an important element of the models presented in this chapter. It is an approximate method for modeling systems in which calls are serviced simultaneously by the same servers and it allows interdependence of service processes of the call in servers to be taken into ...
