Pen Registers
Another good source for leads is a pen register on the subject’s
telephone. Dialed-number recorders (DNRs), or pen registers,
do not (usually) require a wiretap order. When they are placed
on the subject’s telephone line, they will provide details of the
numbers dialed for all outgoing calls. Combined with a “trap
and trace,” the pen register will cover incoming calls as well.
