Know the reading child
It is all too easy to say that trying to assess the age of the child being targeted by a story should not be a factor in the creative process. There are those who will say a good writing, a good book, a story well told will always find its reader. This is a story I have heard often but I do not believe it. There are many reasons for this and the publishing industry, in unofficial cahoots with the education industry, owns most of them. But this issue is not to be confused with the ‘No to Age Banding’ campaign.1 So let's consider both points together.
