2.3. Terminal Architecture

The overall architecture of an MPEG-4 terminal is depicted in Figure 2.3. At the bottom of the figure is the storage or transmission medium; this refers to the lower layers of the delivery infrastructure. MPEG-4 data can be transported on a variety of delivery systems as described in Section 2.2. This includes MPEG-2 transport streams, RTP/UDP over IP, and MPEG-4 (MP4) files. MPEG-4 data can also be sent over other transport mechanisms, such as Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) or Digital Audio Broadcast (DAB), using one or a combination of the previous stacks of protocols.
