9.3. 2D Mesh Coding

MPEG-4 is an object-based coding standard. In MPEG-4 Visual [MPEG4-2], the object-based video coding of natural video data is performed by means of a block-based texture and motion coding scheme together with a shape information coding scheme. A different approach to object-based video can be taken through 2D meshes or 2D planar graphs with triangles. Combined with natural video, a 2D mesh object can provide a unique way to support 2D mesh-based video coding.

The functionalities provided by the MPEG-4 2D mesh coding tool are these:

  • Efficient compression of 2D meshes

  • Texture mapping on top of 2D meshes

  • Text overlays

  • Image and graphics overlays (augmented reality)

2D mesh coding is designed mostly for video manipulation; thus, ...
