10.5. Error Robustness

One of the important new features of the MPEG-4 Audio standard [MPEG4-3] is that it provides error-robustness tools that allow improved performance on error-prone transmission channels. These tools comprise the following:

  • Error-resilience coding tools for some natural speech and natural audio codecs,

  • Error-resilient (reordered) bitstream payload syntax,

  • An error-protection tool, and

  • Error-concealment tools (informative).

The error-resilience tools and the error-resilient bitstream syntax are defined normatively for the corresponding audio object types (see Chapter 13); the error-protection tool is defined in a normative way, but its use is optional; the error-concealment tools are described in the informative part of the MPEG-4 ...
